Matcha Latte Cappuccino Recipe for Beginners

Having participated in a traditional matcha tea ceremony in Japan in 2019, I appreciate the ceremonial aspects and the pure taste of matcha. However, I also recognize that this more intense experience might not be for everyone, especially beginners. This Matcha Latte Cappuccino recipe offers a delightful alternative, allowing newcomers to enjoy matcha in a lighter, more familiar format.

What is Matcha Latte Cappuccino

A Matcha Latte Cappuccino is a delightful fusion of traditional Japanese matcha tea and the creamy, frothy texture of a cappuccino. Unlike the traditional matcha served in Japanese tea ceremonies—which involves sipping a purely whisked matcha tea—this beverage combines matcha with milk and ice, making it a more accessible and enjoyable drink for those who may find the robust flavor of straight matcha too intense.

Why This Recipe is Great for Beginners

  • Milder Flavor: The addition of milk dilutes the strong, grassy flavor of matcha, making it smoother and more palatable for those new to matcha.
  • Simple Steps: The process involves straightforward steps that do not require the traditional tools or techniques used in a Japanese tea ceremony, making it less intimidating.
  • Familiar Format: By presenting matcha in a form similar to popular coffee drinks, it becomes more approachable for those who are accustomed to typical Western café offerings.

Matcha Latte Cappuccino Recipe

Ingredients (makes 12 oz):
  • Matcha Powder: 3 grams (0.11 oz) or about 2 teaspoons
  • Hot Water: 6 oz at 80°C (176°F)
  • Milk: 1/2 cup (4 oz), any variety you prefer: dairy, almond, soy, oat. I think oat milk froths better.
  • Sweetener of choice (optional, e.g., liquid stevia)

Instructions:
  1. Sift the Matcha: Place your matcha powder into a tea strainer over a ceramic bowl. Use a bamboo tea ladle to push the powder through, ensuring no clumps. This makes the matcha smoother and easier to whisk.
  2. Prepare the Water: Boil water and pour it into a teacup to bring the temperature down to about 80°C (176°F). Then, pour half (3 oz) of the hot water into the bowl with the sifted matcha.
  3. Whisk the Matcha: Take your bamboo whisk and vigorously whisk the matcha and water mixture for about 15 seconds. Use a back-and-forth motion, forming an “M” shape, until the tea is frothy.
  4. Assemble the Drink: Add sweetener to the glass cup. Add the remaining 3 oz of water into the glass cup. Froth the milk and pour it in the glass cup with water. Gently pour the whisked matcha over the milk. The matcha should sit beautifully on top of the milk, creating a distinct, layered appearance.
  5. Enjoy! Stir lightly before drinking to mix the creamy milk with the vibrant matcha.
